the 1975, “You”

“It’s my party, and I will cry until it ends.”

So, I’m trying this new thing. It’s a novel idea, but I think it might work. Instead of posting a few YouTube videos in the span of six months and pretending like I still write a blog, it seems a good idea to actually just…write my blog. With a helpful nudge (or five) from a friend, I’m back cracking at keys with the 1975 – a Mancunian alt-punk/indie four piece with two immense and recently released EPs. With a more than modest following here in the UK, the band also has quite the chance of breaking in the States as longstanding indie mainstay Vagrant Record’s new signing. While they’ve finally nailed down both a moniker and an identity (formerly known Drive Like I Do and a brief string of at least 3 other names), they’ve also nailed down one of my favourite new tracks of the past few months.

All We Are – Cardhouse

This song makes me want to come out of one of my all-too-habitual blog hiatuses. I have listened to it ad nauseam, minus the nausea. Liverpool’s All We Are have just this past weekend released the video for their new single “Cardhouse” and have, ever so kindly, put the track up for a free download as well. The  highly anticipated new EP entitled We Hunt”, which was recorded in isolation in a small cabin in the Norwegian forest, is to follow shortly after.  If you’re based in London, the band has a fair few shows scheduled throughout the summer…

Little Comets, “Waiting In The Dead Of Night”

Although the new single isn’t slated for release until late May, Little Comets are already celebrating – and thankfully so. ‘Jennifer’ follows the release of December’s Worry EP and In Search of the Elusive Little Comets, the debut that launched the band into UK indie stardom. To mark the new release , they’ve recorded an acoustic version of “Waiting In The Dead Of Night”, and have made it available as a free download.  The band is on the tail end of their mini UK tour, with a gig tomorrow at London’s Scala.

Youth Imperial

“I couldn’t see the lamplight…”

I’ve nothing but high praise for Youth Imperial after seeing a stripped back set a couple of weeks back at a North London open mic night. Filthy McNasty’s up in N1 doesn’t quite sound like the best place to find your new favourite melodic alt/pop band, but I can assure you the sounds that night courtesy of frontman Robbie Redway and Tinks Gray were anything but.  As of yet I only know of one track being available, but from what I can tell it’s well worth keeping eyes open and ears peeled for any recording updates.

Bear’s Den, “Pompeii”

New-ish music from London’s elusive Bear’s Den. Although there hasn’t been a ton of movement in the past few months, a new song and some semi-regular gigging is a good sign. I can’t wait for this band to come out with something HUGE.  In my opinion, frontman Andrew Davie is some of the finest talent that Communion UK has worked with. For some old jams, look into Cherbourg – which was the previous incarnation of Bear’s Den.

new Three Blind Wolves

You try writing eight songs in one day.  Glasgow’s Three Blind Wolves, one of my favorites, recently put a few new “I bet you can’t…” tracks up on their site.  Read the description on the band’s official page for a bit more info. All eight tracks are available as free downloads.  Keep eyes and ears peeled for a formal debut album via Communion sometime this year.  It is THEE one to watch for in 2012.
