Delta/Alaska

Nice track from new North London band Delta/Alaska. Don’t have much information on them, but I do know they used to be called Kamikaze Practice. Earlier post and mp3 can be found here.

Ghost Saddles

“This is where I found my peace.”

Mancunian cult favorites, the Maple State, are in a precarious state of ‘nobody knows’.  Are they still writing together? Do they plan on recording anything anytime soon?  The Say, Scientist EP  back in 2008 was the last we have heard from them – with little to no activity happening since.  Front man Greg Counsell has, however, been up to something. Ghost Saddles is Counsell’s new solo project and, although it has been moving slowly for the last couple of years, at least it’s moving.  The project started quietly with a few acoustic demos that could be found if you knew where to look, that have since turned into full-fledged recordings. I don’t know anything about an official release, but here’s what I have been able to dig up.

Fatherson, “Hometown”

In addition to the Fatherson post below, here is the official video for the band’s new single – “Hometown”.  The single is taken from the upcoming self-titled EP, which will be released on July 18th via King Tut’s Recordings.

Fatherson, “Town for Tourists”

“…and I’ll run faster, and I’ll be better than anyone you’ll bring home.”

I’ve written about this young Scottish 3-piece many, many, many times before – in their previous incarnation, at least. The newly minted Fatherson, formerly known as the enigmatic Energy!, haven’t yet released an EP under their latest name, but new material is on it’s way – July, in fact. I’ve always been over the moon about this band.  Their first EP as Energy!, Where the Water Meets the Land, was filled with five wonderfully melodic alt-pop tracks.  Their debut as Fatherson comes in the form of a free track they posted a few months back on Bandcamp, and takes only a slightly different direction.  The band ditches the guitar melodics in favor of a stripped down piano ballad, performed by front man Ross Leighton.

Three Blind Wolves, “Farmer With A Pulse”

New song from an absolute favorite of mine – Glasgow’s Three Blind Wolves. The band has started working with Communion Records in the UK and Europe, so expect more soon.  Pick up the Sound of the Storm EP if you haven’t already. Previous posts are here and here.

Edelweiss

“They will follow after.”

Since when do things like this happen? I love a good wunderkind  story. It’s kind of the most unexpected thing I have stumbled across in awhile. Edelweiss is the brainchild of the Porlier brothers, Niko and Coby, who later enlisted the help of friends-of-friends Tommy and Tony to round out the four piece. They are all 15-17 years old, and unapologetically cooler and more talented than the lot of us. The band jumps between their unassuming hometown of Stroudsburg, PA and NYC to gig at the Knitting Factory and the Mercury Lounge. WHAT?! Their debut EP Pre-Columbians is to be released on July 12th.  You’ll probably be hearing more than you want to about these four kids in the upcoming months.

LightGuides, “Old Bucket Seats” single

“I can’t keep up.”

All hail the most recent signing to one of my favorite UK indies.  LightGuides is a pair of brothers coupled with a longtime friend, the newest addition to the roster over at Oxford’s Alcopop! Records and, above all, a great melodic alt-pop group from Glasgow.  After the signing, it didn’t take long to notice that they’ve filled support slots for some of my favorite Scottish bands – Frightened Rabbit and the Xcerts – something to get excited about. They have released on EP independently, Past & Present, with another one soon on the way.  The band will be launching their single “Old Bucket Seats” tonight at the Captain’s Rest in Glasgow – but they’ve also opted to put it up on their official site as a free download for a limited time.
