Southeast Engine, “Canary”

“New growth is what I’m looking for.”

Besides being fond of Midwesterners and Misra Records, the seasoned alt-folk vets behind Ohio’s Southeast Engine simply do not leave me much of which to be critical.  Canary, released early last week, impresses just as much as its predecessors and has been well-received by an indie press armed to the teeth with nice things to say about the band’s 5th studio album. Well written bits of alt-country and roots-rock couple with colorful strokes of Appalachia for a welcome throwback to something and somewhere that most of us don’t know and never will, but the result is something curious and fantastic.
