Mimas

“We found a monster and we brought it back.”

Holy chops, this band is fantastic. I should have been listening to Mimas for years, and yet I can count the days on two hands.  Moreover, their album The Worries, which has kicked my feet out from under me in a supersize kind of way every single day this week, was released back in 2008 via one of my UK favorites – Big Scary Monsters.  The band, unfortunately, seems not so busy at home in their native Denmark at the moment – save for two gigs in August.  I can only imagine they’re hard at work writing the sophomore record that I would have been dreaming had I had any indication of what I’ve been missing.

Our Anatomy, Denouement

“Is this city my home?”

Scrappy yet still technical.  I appreciate that.  A nice amalgam of tender and cerebral indie tunes, but with enough tempered bellicosity to be proper rock and roll band.  Our Anatomy finds their way to the site all the way from Melbourne, AU.  The debut EP Denouement was released by EXO Records, the brainchild of two ultra passionate musicheads with a barefaced affection for good music, good people, and good times.  The band has a few local shows on the horizon, and though I’m not sure that my regular audience stretches as a far Melbourne – head out if you find yourself in the part of the world.

Alms at Blue Walrus

Head straight over to the Blue Walrus to read about Brighton via West London band Alms.  Such a great find. Three tracks available for download. I’m impressed, all I want to do is listen on loop this evening.

Hot Horizons, “6AM”

“Guilt so paralyzing.”

It’s times like these that I wish WordPress had a “re-tweet” function.  I usually don’t like to recycle content that I read from other blogs, but this song by a very literal band of brothers is far too amazing to pass over.  *All credit goes to Jamila over at FD for the fantastic find.  Hot Horizons is, to reiterate, composed of the McCarthy brothers (now with some additional friends to help them perform their sweet, sweet music live) from Leicester. It’s a shame that this band has flown under the radar for event 3 seconds, because it’s 3 seconds too many.  The band will be at Hackney’s Victoria Park next week for Underage Festival.  Haven’t caught wind of any upcoming releases, but I can only hope, wish, hope, and wish ten times more that something official hits the map soon.

Magic Kids – Memphis (2010)

Anyone who pre-orders the new Magic Kids disc from True Panther gets an instant download of the entire release in mp3 format. If you haven’t already heard the disc’s first single, which is already adding an an absurd amount of shiny plastic throwback luster (excuse my verbosity, there’s no simpler way to describe it) to my summer playlist – find it here.  Excited to work my way through the rest of the album tonight.

Cats and Cats and Cats; If I’d Had an Atlas

“These costumes are part of me.”

I fell into Cats around the same time I fell into This Town Needs Guns.  Both occupy a special place in my math-pop heart, as they seem to do with many of the genre’s broad-minded enthusiasts.  Cats and Cats and Cats hail from a number of the Home Counties, but came together at the University of Hertfordshire back in (or even before) 2005.  The release of the new LP If I’d Had an Atlas is preceded by the band’s first two EPs and a split (the reason I fell deeply and hopelessly in love with the five-piece) with TTNG – courtesy of Big Scary Monsters.  The disc was launched back in May at the Luminaire in Kilburn.
